Singer, songwriter and entertainer Toby Keith has turned deficiencies in his golf game into the latest in a string of viral video hits, and that’s not all. Music lovers and duffers who commiserate with Keith’s links jinx can now be reminded to laugh at themselves every time they get a call, as “Shitty Golfer” has been made available as a ringtone. The second video release – but not a radio single, obviously – from Keith’s record-breaking No. 1 comedy album The Bus Songs, “Shitty Golfer” has garnered millions of views. “Golfer” is pouring it on in the wake of the album’s first release, “Wacky Tobaccy,” which was an immediate viral hit.
Both clips have helped fuel The Bus Songs, which set a Billboard comedy albums chart record for a country artist by holding the No. 1 spot for 11 consecutive weeks. A collection of humorous, just-for-fun compositions from the 2015 Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, The Bus Songs was named to Amazon’s “Top Albums of 2017.”
The release brings strong momentum into the new year for Keith, whose 2017 also featured a momentous recognition. The Academy of Country Music gave him the Poet’s Award, its highest songwriting honor. Keith was celebrated on a CBS-TV telecast, along with fellow honorees Willie Nelson and Shel Silverstein, for a body of work characterized by exceptionally written songs … as well as one that is, admittedly, shitty.
