Mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile announced that he will be taking the show on the road in January with live broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion in Seattle, Chicago and Pasadena.
After ringing in the New Year, the show heads west to Seattle, WA on January 7 with a live broadcast from the Paramount Theatre featuring The Shins and Regina Spektor. On January 14, the show heads back to the upper Midwest with a broadcast at the Symphony Center in Chicago, IL with special guests Justin Vernon, leader of the band Bon Iver, along with comedian Beth Stelling. Then it’s back on the road and chasing the sunshine to southern California with a January 21 broadcast at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium with guest Ryan Adams.
Tickets are on sale now for the 2017 shows, which will also feature The Royal Academy of Radio Actors—Tim Russell (man of a thousand voices), Serena Brook and sound effects wizard Fred Newman. Plus fan favorites: the Powdermilk Instant Internet Song Request, a weekly birthday salute to musicians and composers, and Chris will also compose and perform a unique new song for each live broadcast.
This season also includes a live broadcast at the famed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN on February 4, before the show heads back home to St. Paul for broadcasts on February 11 and 18.
Chris Thile was hand selected by Garrison Keillor to take over as host of the famed and long-running live radio variety show in the fall of 2016. Chris—a multiple Grammy Award-winner and MacArthur Fellow and a member of Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek—is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist. With his broad outlook that encompasses classical, rock, jazz, and bluegrass, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike. As a soloist Thile has released five albums, including his most recent released in 2013, Bach: Partitas and Sonatas, Vol.1, which was produced by renowned bassist Edgar Meyer. In February 2013 Thile won a Grammy for his work on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan. Then, in September 2014, Thile and Meyer released their latest album collaboration, Bass + Mandolin, which won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. Punch Brothers released their latest album, The Phosphorescent Blues, in 2015.
